It is one of only a few museums worldwide to present a comprehensive history of art from the third millennium B.C. to the early 20th century. The collection includes Egyptian mummies, Renaissance armor, Fabergé eggs, Art Nouveau jewelry, and old master paintings. The institution holds the finest collection of ivories, jewelry, enamels and bronzes in America and maintains a substantial reserve of illuminated manuscripts and rare books. Its holdings span Egyptian, Greek and Roman, Byzantine, Ethiopian and Western medieval art, as well as Renaissance and Asian art, with representation of major trends in 19th-century French painting. The Walters employs between 51 and 200 staff.
