Theatre of the Oppressed NYC is a New York City–based organization that follows a global practice rooted in the work of Brazilian theatre director Augusto Boal. It partners with communities facing discrimination and runs ongoing Forum Theatre Troupe programs as well as workshops for organizations and individuals. In the troupes, community members devise and perform plays about challenges such as economic inequality, racism, and other social, health, and human rights injustices; these performances are followed by theatrical brainstorming with audiences to explore paths for change at individual, community, and political levels.

Programs have sustained engagement with community partners for six to eleven years, reflecting a long-term community practice model. Operating within the performing arts sector, TONYC positions itself at the intersection of theatre and social practice, delivering services from New York City to address discrimination through collective action on multiple levels.
