Founded through the merger of the Southwest Georgia Historical Society, organized in 1969, and the Albany Junior Museum, founded in 1959 by the Junior League of Albany, Thronateeska Heritage Foundation was established in 1974 by community-minded citizens dedicated to revitalizing Albany’s historic downtown railroad depot area.

Today, Thronateeska’s campus, known as Heritage Plaza, features the History Museum, Science Museum, and Wetherbee Planetarium, all located on Albany’s last remaining brick street. The 1913 Union Station depot was preserved and repurposed as the History Museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It now hosts rotating exhibits in two galleries.

The Science Museum, built in 2008, incorporates architectural elements of the original 1926 Central Georgia Roundhouse and includes interactive exhibits and science-based programming. It also houses the Wetherbee Planetarium, which features a 40 foot HD fulldome screen and a rotating schedule of immersive shows.

In 2014, the South Georgia Archives was added to the historic Fryer Merritt House, which also serves as Thronateeska’s administrative offices.

Thronateeska also stewards the Tift Warehouse, the REA building, and Albany’s Railroad Depot Historic District, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
