Welcome to the Town of Superior, Colorado! We are conveniently located between Boulder and Denver along the U.S. 36 corridor. The Town is an expanding and innovative community, offering new development opportunities, established neighborhoods, exceptional mountain views, local businesses, and signature events. We recognize that, long before being officially incorporated, this area was the ancestral homeland to Native people from many Indigenous nations, including the Ute, Cheyenne, Comanche, Arapaho, Sioux, and Kiowa. Descendants of these original people remain here, and their historical relationship and connection with this land continues. Superior's modern history is one of coal mining, with the first mines developed in the late 1800s. Reportedly, the Town was named after the "superior" quality of the coal found in the area. Superior was founded in 1896 and incorporated June 4, 1904. Mining remained a significant force until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. After the mine closed, many people moved out of the area, and Superior evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community. Until more recently, the population hovered around 250. According to census data, the Town of Superior now has 13,087 residents. Rock Creek Ranch is the Town's largest residential development. The Town is approximately 4 square miles in area and boasts some 630 acres of parks, green space, and open space and 35 miles of trails.
