The Town of Wappinger, is located within New York’s Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, just 70 miles north of New York City, along the eastern banks of the majestic Hudson River. The Town’s population is made up of over 28,000 residents of all creeds, cultures, and nationalities. The name, Wappinger, is derived from the Wappani Native Americans who inhabited our area. Wappinger comprises 3/4 of the incorporated Village of Wappingers Falls, the unincorporated hamlets of Chelsea, Diddell, FowlerHouse, Hughsonville, Middlebush, Myers Corners, New Hackensack, and Swartwoutville, and a number of residential neighborhoods.
Wappinger is the second most densely populated Town in Dutchess County and covers a total of 28.5 square miles.  Our Town is home to quiet neighborhoods, five-star dining, premier shopping amenities, breathtaking natural sites, fascinating history, exceptional schools, and so much more!  
Our celebrated history as a community dates back to 1659 as one of the first European settlements in our region. We cherish what makes Wappinger special; our open spaces, local businesses, historic sites, and small-town charm which is demonstrated through our rural-suburban way of life. Our hardworking families, seniors, veterans, and youth are the backbone of this culturally diverse community.
It is governed by a five-member Town Board. The 30th Town Supervisor, Joseph D. Cavaccini, was elected to the office in November 2023. The Town Supervisor serves as the Chief Executive, Operations, and Fiscal Officer of town government. He presides at all meetings of the Wappinger Town Board, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The Town Supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of nearly 20 departments, $20million annual operating budget, and nearly 150 employees.
