The company helps students from across all economic sectors prepare, apply, and go to college. Transcend matches them with personal advisers who work with students through a comprehensive step-by-step program that begins with academic tutoring, to SAT and ACT test preparation, to college applications, to financial aid, and other steps to help students find the perfect fit college. The founder, Tina Neville, a graduate of Yale University and the University of Tulsa, is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. During a brief hiatus with the State Department, Tina fell in love with teaching while long-term substitute teaching at the Washington Latin Public Charter School. This experienced encouraged her to explore teaching, and Tina accepted a Geography Instructor position at the private preparatory National Cathedral School in Washington, DC. To supplement her income, Tina privately assisted students with SAT preparation and college applications and created her own curriculum in the process. Tina’s first two students each improved their SAT scores by more than 200 points and gained admission to Columbia University and Northwestern University. The results generated word of mouth referrals that required the Founder to seek help from friends to work with students. Tina initially drew from her Yale alumni network and her husband’s Georgetown alumni network to recruit advisers.
