Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) is a membership-based nonprofit in South Africa focused on achieving equitable access to HIV and AIDS treatment within the public healthcare system, with tuberculosis medicines added to its advocacy remit over time. Founded in 1998, it represents users of public health services and pursues safe, affordable medicines through campaigns and advocacy. Its work combines monitoring of health facilities with advocacy aimed at ensuring prevention, treatment, care, and support for people living with HIV and TB. 

TAC has influenced policy and legal outcomes, including a 2002 Constitutional Court ruling that required the government to provide antiretroviral therapy for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, and it contributed to the government’s adoption of the National Strategic Plan on HIV, STIs and TB in 2007. Based in South Africa with a mid-sized staff, TAC has sustained high-profile campaigns and partnerships, and in 2021 it launched the People’s Health Manifesto and welcomed the appointment of Dr. Joe Phaahla as Minister of Health.
