Exploring fact, fiction and what lies in between, the True/False Film Fest champions films that breathe life into the nonfiction format by honoring the finest new work redefining this exploding form. T/F spotlights long-form examinations of complex issues; tight, humorous stories of curious people and places; unexpected glimpses of life from around the globe; films that push the boundaries of their genre. Focusing on the connection between diverse filmmakers and our community rather than on awards, True/False fosters collegial camaraderie and an unhurried opportunity to view and discuss great films. Mixed in with a full schedule of films are a full slate of music, art installations, and events designed to stimulate conversation, debate, community, and pure fun. These include parties, field trips, panel discussions, a game show, and a parade that kicks off the four-day weekend. Having celebrating its 12th anniversary March 5-8, 2015, True/False has attained a unique status in the documentary world. It is now seen as a "filmmaker utopia" which attracts the best documentaries in the world, accompanied by their directors--all to a small town in the Midwest. Far from the mountains, oceans, media machines or other perks that usually mark a festival destination, Columbia is a friendly college town of over 100,000 people. The festival was started locally, and it is now a grassroots phenomenon, selling 45,000 tickets and supported by 1,000 volunteers. Marked by a small-town fervor usually reserved for college football, True/False is instead targeted to films that fall outside of mainstream fare. More than anything, we take pride in creating a joyful, festival atmosphere that simultaneously takes the movies very seriously. The festival, launched in 2004, married our love of documentaries and our town’s heritage of great journalism. Get a sense of the Fest by watching our daily recap videos at www.truefalse.org.
