The UAB Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship operates within the University of Alabama at Birmingham to cultivate an entrepreneurial community and an innovation-driven ecosystem. It provides the infrastructure and collaborative pathways that enable students, staff, and faculty to move ideas and technologies toward commercialization on campus, in the Birmingham region, and beyond. Through partnerships with UAB schools, colleges, programs, and the local business community, the institute works to broaden access to entrepreneurship and to support the launch of sustainable startups based on new or disruptive technologies. As part of UAB’s research services landscape, the institute facilitates rapid development of new ideas, products, and technologies and prepares researchers to become entrepreneurs in a technology-enabled environment. The office has recorded over 2,800 intellectual property disclosures, helped issue more than 600 U.S. patents, and supported the formation of around 75 companies built on UAB technologies. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, the organization operates within a university framework and collaborates with internal and external partners to advance innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and businesses.
