Based in Los Angeles, UCLA Center X operates as a center within the university's education department, focusing on education administration programs. It brings together a sizeable community of educators across multiple initiatives, including two graduate credential tracks - the Teacher Education Program and the Principal Leadership Institute - and a range of professional development opportunities. Founded in 1992 amid the Rodney King uprisings, Center X emerged at the intersection of research and practice with roots in activist community work. It seeks to confront deep social inequities manifested in schools, recognizing that opportunities and achievement are unevenly distributed. The center views public schooling as a durable democratic space for inquiry and change, guiding collaborative work with teachers, students, parents, community members, elected officials and researchers to transform practice.
