The UCSF HEAL Initiative operates in the hospitals and health care sector from Oakland, California, and maintains a small team. It trains and transforms front-line health professionals while building a community dedicated to serving underserved communities as a lifelong commitment, grounded in equity, justice, and solidarity. The organization emphasizes that health can be achieved for vulnerable populations when communities unite to reform systems, and it operates multiple programs to empower clinicians in resource-denied settings. Current programs include the Global HEAL Program to address physician vacancies and empower local health workers worldwide, the Mexico Leadership Program delivering the program in Spanish to rural nurses, the Southwest Leadership Program supporting Indigenous nurse leaders in the Navajo Nation, and the California HEAL Program addressing needs across the state. The group plans to expand leadership initiatives in East Africa and India in coming years. In October 2023, HEAL Initiative announced it was developing a Federally Qualified Health Center outreach strategy.
