UIC, or International Union of Railways, is a global industry association that promotes rail transport and supports collaborative development of rail systems. It hosts roughly two hundred members from across five continents, including rail operators, infrastructure managers, and service providers. The organization maintains close working relationships with manufacturers, rail associations, public authorities, and other sector stakeholders to share expertise and spur rail development. Its primary activities include identifying the business needs of the rail community, designing innovation programs, and producing a series of guidance documents known as IRS to facilitate adoption of new solutions.

Based in Paris, within the Île-de-France region, UIC operates as a coordinating hub for global rail stakeholders, aligning efforts to advance rail transport worldwide. A concrete recent development is that in May 2026, UIC partnered with the Tshwane University of Technology to host the first Commuter and Regional Train Services Training in Johannesburg, marking a milestone in expanding rail expertise in Africa.
