UMIACS is a research institute at the University of Maryland that uses computation to address complex challenges in science and society, based in College Park, Maryland. Founded in 1984, it serves as a hub for interdisciplinary discovery, bringing together more than 130 faculty members from 16 departments across the campus. The institute supports collaboration among faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and students to advance areas such as trustworthy artificial intelligence, machine translation, autonomous robotics, microbiome science, quantum information science, computer vision, and cybersecurity. UMIACS secures external funding totaling more than $30 million annually and partners with federal agencies, national laboratories, and industry in the Washington–Baltimore region, including collaborations with physicians at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Education and training are central to its mission, with more than 200 graduate students supported and undergraduate research opportunities through NSF-funded programs, and initiatives such as the Immersive Media Design program.
