The Unitarian Universalist Association is a religious organization headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. It grew out of the union of two historical traditions—Universalists and Unitarians—consolidating in 1961. Its roots span North America, tracing back to early Massachusetts settlers and the founders of the Republic, with linked heritage to communities in England, Poland, and Transylvania. The association oversees more than a thousand congregations across the United States, Canada, and overseas, each governed democratically and self-directed, and affiliated with one of 19 districts to access services beyond what a single congregation can provide. It identifies as a liberal religious movement with Jewish-Christian roots and no formal creed, affirming the worth of every person and the freedom to believe while prioritizing ethical living and a welcoming, supportive community. The UUA employs hundreds of staff and supports efforts to sustain congregational vitality and innovation, including notable developments such as the 2025 release of Sing Out Love, its first virtual hymnal.
