The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an independent nonprofit founded by Congress in 1984 to promote peace by preventing, mitigating, and resolving violent conflict abroad. Based in Washington, DC, it operates through its headquarters and field engagements in some of the world's most dangerous regions, serving as a neutral intermediary that convenes diverse stakeholders to advance peacebuilding. The organization develops research-based tools and offers expert trainings for peacebuilders, including negotiators, mediators, and diplomats, to improve collaboration in resolving conflicts. It designs field-tested peacebuilding plans and analyses, along with strategic gaming exercises for practitioners. It also connects the public with resources on America's role in peace and deploys specialists to collaborate with counterparts worldwide; in early 2026, USIP participated in the World Economic Forum in Davos.
