The United States Senate is one chamber of the U.S. Congress, alongside the House of Representatives in the federal legislature. It has met since 1789, with each state represented by two senators who serve staggered six-year terms. The Senate is located in the north wing of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., with the House occupying the south wing. It exercises exclusive powers such as consenting to treaties, confirming appointments of key federal officials, and trying impeached federal officers.
