The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala is a public higher education institution with roots dating back to its formal recognition as a university in 1676 by royal command from King Charles II of Spain, making it one of the oldest universities in the Americas. Based in Guatemala City, it operates as a large university known for the quality of its teaching and academic research, and it maintains an international orientation. Its guiding philosophy aims to cultivate responsible, free-thinking individuals with sensitivity to social problems, supported by a higher-than-average study workload. In April 2026, reports described a deep compromise of the university's infrastructure and a massive data breach affecting its financial system (SIIF). As a public institution, it serves a broad audience of students and researchers and participates in Guatemala's higher education landscape.
