Universidade Federal de Itajubá (Unifei) is a public higher education institution based in Itajubá, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It traces its roots to 1913, when it was founded as the Instituto Eletrotécnico e Mecânico de Itajubá (IEMI) and subsequently evolved through a series of name changes as its engineering programs expanded. In 2002, the institution attained university status, reflecting a broadened scope after a period of growth that began in the late 1990s. It established Campus Itabira through a partnership with the Itabira municipal government and the Vale company, with activities starting in 2008. Today, Unifei offers 34 undergraduate programs—25 in Itajubá and 9 in Itabira—and 21 graduate programs, with the postgraduate offerings centered in Itajubá. This expansion indicates a broader reach beyond its original engineering-focused beginnings.
