Universitat d'Alacant is a higher education institution established in 1979, evolving from the Center for University Studies founded in 1968. Its main campus is on the Sant Vicent del Raspeig site, near the city of Alicante, Spain, occupying about one square kilometer. The university employs between 1,001 and 5,000 staff and had approximately 33,000 students in the 2010/11 academic year. It offers more than fifty degree programs and encompasses more than seventy departments and research groups across social sciences and law, experimental and technology disciplines, humanities, education, and health sciences, along with five university research institutes. The institution traces its heritage to the historic University of Orihuela (founded by Papal Bull in 1545), reflecting the province's long university tradition.
