University Heights Charter School is a public charter school in Newark's Central Ward, New Jersey, offering education from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It opened in fall 2006 with grades K–2 and now serves about 658 students, the vast majority from low-income families and all identifying as minority. The school aims to develop character, scholarship, and leadership to support success in life, college, and community. The school's strategy is anchored in six core beliefs, including the idea that all students can achieve high levels of character, scholarship, and leadership, and that effective instruction is the primary driver of achievement. To implement this framework, UHCS focuses on recruiting highly qualified educators and providing extensive professional development and support, including time in the summer.
