The University of Alicante is a higher education institution located in San Vicente del Raspeig, in the Valencian Community of Spain, with a campus described as one square kilometer near the city of Alicante and an employee base of about 1,000 to 5,000 staff. It was established in 1979 on the basis of the Center for University Studies (CEU) founded in 1968 and inherits the legacy of the University of Orihuela, which dates back to 1545. The university offers more than fifty degree programs and includes over seventy departments and research groups across fields including social sciences and law, sciences and technology, humanities, education, and health sciences, as well as five university research institutes. It serves a substantial student body, with around 33,000 students reported for the 2010/11 academic year, and has been characterized by notable proportional growth in student numbers among Spanish universities. The institution engages in research and international collaboration, including participation in projects such as BIKE-HEI with partner universities as part of the Transform4Europe Alliance.
