The University of Delaware is a higher education institution based in Newark, Delaware. It operates as a state-assisted, privately chartered university that holds Land Grant, Sea Grant, and Space Grant designations and is classified as a Carnegie Research University with very high research activity. Founded in the 18th century and chartered by the state in 1833, the university opened a women's college in 1914 and became permanently coeducational in 1945, with its main campus in Newark and additional locations around the state, including Wilmington and other sites in Dover, Georgetown, Milford, and Lewes. The institution employs more than ten thousand people. In June 2026, the university, through the Center for Environmental Monitoring and Analysis and the Delaware Geological Survey, launched a water tracker tool to monitor groundwater levels, precipitation, and evapotranspiration.
