The University of Eastern Finland is a large, multidisciplinary higher education institution based in Kuopio, with additional campuses in Joensuu, in the North Savo region of Finland. It serves roughly 16,000 students and employs around 3,200 staff, delivering instruction across more than 100 major subjects and organized into four faculties: Philosophical; the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology; the Faculty of Health Sciences; and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. The university was established in 2010 through the merger of the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio. Research at the university emphasizes interdisciplinarity, with core areas addressing ageing, lifestyles and health; learning in a digitised society; cultural encounters, mobilities and borders; and environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources. It maintains extensive international relations, including bilateral agreements with roughly 100 universities and participation in various networks and projects. A recent development is the Weather Vulnerability Index launched in 2026 in collaboration with the City of Joensuu and Karelia University of Applied Sciences.
