The University of Miskolc is a Hungarian higher education institution with a staff size reported between 1,001 and 5,000 employees. Its origins reach back to 1735 as a mining and metallurgy school in Selmecbánya, which gained academy status in 1762 and relocated to Miskolc in 1949, where it developed into a university of heavy industry with the faculties of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The institution expanded to include law in the early 1980s, economics in 1990, and arts in 1997, and its technical faculties today comprise Earth Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Informatics; the Institute of Healthcare began bachelor programs in 2001 and became the Faculty of Healthcare in 2005. In recent years, the university has received recognitions and entered collaborations, including a Round University Ranking placement of 846th globally and 8th among 10 Hungarian institutions as of January 1, 2026, and a cooperation with Royal Cargo Hungary signed in May 2026; it also earned the University of the Year award in 2025 for charitable activities and in 2026 for family-friendly operations, along with an innovation prize in 2026.
