The University of Nevada, Reno is Nevada’s land-grant public research university, founded in 1874 and based in Reno. It enrolls more than 21,000 students and maintains one of the country’s largest study-abroad programs as well as the state's medical school. The university offers outreach and education programs across all Nevada counties and spans a broad range of disciplines, including earth sciences, engineering, seismology, geology, journalism, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, gaming studies, basque studies, and business administration. As a higher-education institution, it serves both degree-seeking students and the broader Nevada community through its teaching, research, and health-related education. A notable development in 2026 was the launch of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the Lake Tahoe campus, expanding nursing education opportunities. In addition, discipline-based programs and students’ participation in national competitions reflect ongoing clinical training and scholarly activity within the university.
