Uppsala Monitoring Centre is an independent, non-profit foundation established in 1978 to promote the safer use of medicines and vaccines. It operates under an agreement between the Government of Sweden and the World Health Organization and runs the Programme for International Drug Monitoring, supporting more than 180 member countries and regions in strengthening pharmacovigilance. The organization maintains VigiBase, the WHO global database of adverse event reports, and provides international standards and digital solutions to enable secure exchange of pharmacovigilance data and identification of medicinal products.

Based in Uppsala, Uppsala region, UMC is a mid-sized research services organization with a workforce in the hundreds. Its customers include member countries and regions and other health authorities that rely on safety surveillance and standardized data sharing for medicines and vaccines. In 2024, it partnered with the MedDRA Maintenance and Support Services Organization to host a global webcast on WHODrug and MedDRA.
