Urban Indian Health Institute is a division of the Seattle Indian Health Board, based in Seattle, Washington. Its mission centers on decolonizing data for Indigenous communities, by Indigenous people, and it treats research, data, and evaluation as Indigenous values. The organization blends Western scientific methods with traditional knowledge to conduct research and evaluation, collect and analyze data, and provide disease surveillance. As the only Tribal Epidemiology Center dedicated to serving Urban Indian Health Programs across the United States, UIHI functions as a national resource for urban Indigenous health data and evaluation. In December 2020, High Country News recognized UIHI for developing best-practice guidance on data collection for Indigenous peoples in public health work.
