The Urban League of Essex County is a Newark-based nonprofit in the field of individual and family services. Since its founding in 1917 by William B. Ashby, it has offered programs that help residents improve their economic security through training, guidance, and access to resources. Historically, the organization provided financial assistance to new arrivals from the South in the early 20th century, helped people obtain their first jobs in the mid-20th century, and later expanded services to include financial education, computer job training for adults, and early childhood education. Its mission is to assist African American and other disadvantaged urban residents in achieving social and economic equality. In June 2026, a collaboration led by New Jersey Community Capital joined the Urban League of Essex County with partners including New Jersey Citizen Action Education Fund, Invest Newark, and the Newark Housing Authority to advance community development initiatives.
