The U.S. Military HIV Research Program is a research services organization based in Silver Spring, Maryland. It aims to protect U.S. service members from HIV and to improve global health by conducting research aimed at an HIV vaccine, reducing new infections, and advancing strategies to achieve long-term HIV remission. The program is centered at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. It operates through an international network of research sites across Africa and Asia and collaborates with key research institutions in the United States and host countries to develop sites and advance science. Since its inception in 1986, it has become a recognized leader in HIV vaccine research, threat assessment and epidemiology, diagnostics, and remission research. Its work is conducted within an ethical framework that integrates prevention and treatment, supported by partnerships under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
