Based in Richmond, Virginia, the Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center provides after-hours veterinary care to the Central Virginia region. Founded in 1981, the center expanded to 24-hour emergency and critical care in 2002. To support this, it added board-certified specialists in surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology and introduced imaging and therapeutic services, including radioactive iodine therapy for feline hyperthyroidism in 2003.

In 2006, the Veterinary Emergency Center joined forces with Veterinary Emergency Center South, and the network later incorporated the Carytown clinic to broaden collaborative, comprehensive care. The organization focuses on emergency and critical care for companion animals across its multi-location network in the Central Virginia region.
