Victorian Opera is Victoria’s state opera company, based in Melbourne, Victoria. Since its founding in 2005, it presents a program that honors the tradition of opera while delivering work that is contemporary and accessible, supported by an annual commission program that has produced 40 new Australian operas to date. In 2021 the company joined the National Performing Arts Partnership Framework, an acknowledgment of its contribution to Australia’s artistic landscape and a mechanism to deepen collaboration and staging across the state and beyond. It relies on a broad ensemble of performers and technical specialists, employing singers, instrumentalists, theatre-makers and crew to bring productions to life. A core focus is developing emerging talent on stage and behind the scenes, from performers to designers and craftspeople, with the aim of strengthening the broader Australian opera and music theatre ecosystem. In 2024 the company was recognized with an award for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and announced performances of the show in September 2024.
