The Village of Riverside is a municipal government serving Riverside, Illinois. It is among the earliest planned communities in the United States and functions as a close suburb of Chicago. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the village, and many original design elements—green parkways, gas-lit street lanterns, and curvilinear streets—are still evident, contributing to its National Historic Landmark designation since 1970. The local economy supports business activity with a relatively high per-capita income, making it a favorable market for dining, retail, and other services and for businesses seeking a second location. In 2025 the village, in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, launched an initiative to invite public input on the region's transportation system; the community emphasizes collaboration in public service.
