Village Voice Media operates as a mid-sized publisher within the book and periodical publishing sector, based in New York City. The Village Voice, founded in 1955 by Norman Mailer and a small group, is regarded as the nation’s original alternative weekly and has earned several Pulitzer Prizes. The publication is known for its role as an aggressive interrogator of those in power while serving as a resource for uncovering and promoting cutting-edge arts and culture. Over the years it has hosted a diverse array of writers and artists, including e.e. cummings, Katherine Anne Porter, Ezra Pound, James Baldwin, Sylvia Plachy, Lynda Barry, Wayne Barrett, Tom Robbins, Robert Christgau, and J. Hoberman, among others.

Through acquisitions and mergers, the company evolved into Village Voice Media Holdings, which at one point published 17 free weekly newspapers with a combined circulation of about 1.8 million. In January 2022, a longtime Village Voice contributor was recognized with the George Jean Nathan Award for dramatic criticism.
