The Virginia Department of Taxation is a state government agency based in Richmond that administers the commonwealth's tax laws. It oversees more than 37 state and local taxes, including individual and corporate income taxes, sales and use taxes, and various excises, aiming to apply these rules with integrity and efficiency. The department serves approximately 5.5 million taxpayers across Virginia and relies on tax revenues to fund government services that touch daily life. About one third of the agency's staff works remotely from locations across the state. It engages directly with individual and business taxpayers, retail organizations, local governments, and key state offices such as the General Assembly, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Governor’s Office to ensure the collection and administration of revenue is fair and diligent.
