The Virginia Tech College of Engineering is on the forefront of innovation, working in disruptive technology areas that include: autonomous systems and robotics, cybersecurity and cyber physical systems, data analytics and decision sciences, injury and occupational biomechanics, manufacturing materials and systems, energy engineering and science, sustainable infrastructure and construction, transportation and logistics, turbomachinery and diagnostics, corrosion and water, and wireless communications and security. The college is comprised of 360 faculty across 12 departments and 2 schools, offering 14 undergraduate degree-granting engineering majors, 16 doctoral, and 19 master's programs in 17 areas of study. During the 2016-17 academic year, 10,259 undergraduate and graduate students were enrolled.U.S. News & World Report ranks the undergraduate program 16th and its graduate program 27th among doctoral-granting universities. The annual National Science Foundation survey ranks the college 8th out of 381 institutions for engineering research expenditures.
