Voice of Witness is a San Francisco, California-based nonprofit that uses oral history to advance human rights by elevating the voices of people affected by injustice. It supports storytelling and active listening as tools for learning and for dismantling systems of oppression, working through programs and partnerships to document and center community voices and to develop ethics-driven educational resources. The organization seeks to create narrative change toward a more inclusive and just world by applying its approach across collaborations with schools, organizations, and advocates. Its offerings include the VOW Book Series, which presents human rights issues through first-person narratives, and the VOW Education Program, which brings ethical storytelling and field-tested methods into classrooms and organizations across the US. Through partnerships and consulting, VOW provides customized storytelling and program support to a range of clients, from schools to community groups, emphasizing empathy and relationship-building through community voices. In November 2024, Voice of Witness was awarded the Stetson Kennedy Vox Populi award by the Oral History Association.
