Voices for Children of Broward County, Voices, is part of a unique collaboration with the 17th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program, with the mission to ensure that every abused, neglected and abandoned child in Broward County has a court-appointed Guardian ad Litem and that financial resources are available for each child’s accompanying health, educational, and social needs. The Guardian Ad Litem Program, GALP, advocates for the best interest of the children alleged to be abused, abandoned, or neglected who are involved in court proceedings. The program uses a team approach to advocate for the best interests of the children. Utilizing lay volunteers, staff child advocate coordinators and staff attorneys the program collects comprehensive information about the child and family, attend hearings, and take steps to ensure the child’s voice is heard. The GALP is often the only voice, consistently advocating for the child. Voices, founded in 2011, was established due to a gap in state funding for the GALP. The allocated funding is not enough to fully cover all of the GALP’s needs and does not cover programs such as outreach to the community to recruit more volunteers, programs to retain current volunteer base, or emergency needs of the children assigned to the program; moreover, it does not include funding for goods, services and programs purchased for the children to help bring normalcy to their lives.
