Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, based in Newark, New Jersey, is a nonprofit legal services organization focused on ensuring access to justice for people experiencing poverty. The organization mobilizes hundreds of volunteer attorneys and non-attorneys to work alongside staff to address critical civil legal needs across New Jersey. By coordinating pro bono efforts, VLJ seeks to advance racial, social, and economic justice and to help clients pursue pathways to economic stability. VLJ began as a program of the Legal Services Foundation of Essex County, initially concentrating on housing, consumer, family, and education law. Over time, it expanded statewide through partnerships with law firms and corporate legal departments, leveraging volunteer and staff efforts to broaden access to legal services.
