Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) is a nonprofit legal services organization based in New York City that mobilizes pro bono support from the city’s legal community to expand access to civil legal aid. Founded in 1984 in response to budget cuts to public legal services, it collaborates with more than 60 law firms and corporate law departments and partners with over 210 neighborhood-based groups to reach New Yorkers who cannot afford or access legal assistance, addressing issues across several programs such as children, elderly and veterans, immigration, incarcerated mothers, and microenterprise law. The organization operates within the legal services sector, providing free legal advice, representation, and advocacy to help clients achieve dignity, security, and opportunity, particularly for those from underserved socioeconomic backgrounds. In recent years, VOLS has launched initiatives in response to crises, including programs to support unemployed workers, frontline and healthcare workers, and small businesses, and has formed notable partnerships with firms to advance these efforts.
