Wadsworth Center is a science-based public health institution within the New York State Department of Health, based in Albany. It protects and improves the health of New Yorkers through laboratory analysis, investigations and research, as well as laboratory certification and educational programs. As the state's public health reference laboratory, it responds to urgent threats ranging from bioterrorism and emerging infections to environmental outbreaks such as Legionella. Its scientists study ongoing public health challenges, including drug resistance, emerging infections, and environmental exposures, while exploring fundamental biological processes and applying advanced imaging and analytical capabilities to visualize biologically relevant molecules. The center develops methods to detect microbial agents and genetic disorders and measures environmental chemicals to support health surveillance and response. In 2026, the organization formed a partnership with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York to administer the NY PLATES program and support hunger-related initiatives across the state.
