The Waikīkī Aquarium is an educational institution focused on Pacific marine life, dedicated to fostering understanding, appreciation, and conservation. Located along Waikīkī Beach in Honolulu, beside a living reef and opposite Kapiolani Park, it was founded in 1904 and has been administered by the University of Hawaiʻi since 1919, making it the second oldest aquarium in the United States as of 2014. The facility houses more than 500 species of aquatic animals and plants and maintains over 3,000 marine specimens, and it is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The aquarium serves a broad audience of visitors, educators, and students by offering programs that support ocean literacy and conservation. It has partnered with academic and research institutions to broaden its educational scope, including collaborations with Hawaii Pacific University in 2023 to release fish and with the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation and LGBTQ+ Center in 2022 for an educational video.
