The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at Washington University seeks to foster a campus-wide culture of civic life through student learning, participation, and impact. It was founded in 2005 and is based on the Washington University campus in St. Louis, Missouri. The institute centers its work on three pillars: Engage St. Louis, Engage Democracy, and Lead Change, which structure opportunities for students to learn from, contribute to, and lead in civic life. Engage St. Louis connects students with regional change efforts, Engage Democracy develops democratic participation skills, and Lead Change trains students for lifelong civic leadership. The primary audience is WashU students and the broader St. Louis region through partnerships and programs that translate coursework into civic action. The institute aims to catalyze ongoing engagement in civic life beyond graduation by fostering habits of citizen participation.
