Waves for Change (W4C) is a non-profit organization based on Main Road in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, with 51-200 employees. The organization is led by mental health and social service professionals who co-designed the Take 5 Model, an evidence-based, preventative mental wellbeing program delivered through surf therapy for children and adolescents from under-resourced communities in South Africa. W4C trains local community members to provide surf therapy services to referred at-risk youth, leveraging surfing to help participants manage toxic stress and build emotional resilience. Each session includes safe transportation, all necessary surf equipment, psycho-social support from trained coaches, and a nourishing meal, and over the course of one year the program teaches emotional regulation, builds social connections, and provides a safe space to heal and grow. The organization focuses on providing accessible, community-based mental health care through surfing, aiming to improve wellbeing, mental health, behavior, and learning outcomes in vulnerable youth in South Africa's volatile communities.
