The Wayne County Airport Authority operates Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Willow Run Airport (YIP) as an independent agency established by the Michigan State Legislature in 2002. Located in Detroit, Michigan, the authority oversees a major air transportation infrastructure that serves as Michigan’s busiest airport and a prominent regional hub, handling a high volume of passenger traffic and flights daily across multiple destinations. It is self-sustaining and does not rely on tax dollars for airport operations, reflecting its governance and financial model within the aviation sector.
DTW is described as a large, multi-terminal facility with substantial air service and capacity, including numerous daily flights and a wide network of destinations, and has earned recognition such as the Airport Service Quality award for its operational performance. Willow Run complements DTW by functioning as a reliever airport that supports air cargo, general aviation, and corporate aviation. Recent developments include initiatives to enhance passenger accessibility and operations, such as autonomous wheelchair services and parking guidance systems, underscoring ongoing efforts to improve the traveler experience and efficiency at the airport complex.
