It serves the Charlotte market, part of the country’s 22nd largest designated market area, and produces more than 30 hours of local news each week. The station signed on in 1949 as the Carolinas' first television station and is the oldest in the region between Richmond and Atlanta, having been founded by the Jefferson Standard Insurance Company and later owned and operated by Raycom Media.
