The Westport Cinema Initiative is a registered non-profit organization whose goal is to bring a not-for-profit independent art house movie theater to downtown Westport. Westport hasn't had a theater since 1999 when the Fine Arts closed. We're looking at operating models that similar to the Avon Theatre in Stamford CT, the Jacob Burns in Pleasantville NY, and the Film Forum in NYC. While we are planning for a permanent home, we've been running special event screenings at various venues around town as a way to bring some excitement back to going to the movies. Our most recent event was a sing-a-long to the movie Grease which was held in AUgust -- we estimate about 400 people attended. Shortly we'll be rolling out a financial campaign to fund the building and operation of the theater. Thus far we've only been looking for "Angel" donors who can give us $1000 to help cover operating costs, but we're going to be seeking all levels of contributions. We're hoping to have the theater open within 2 years.
