Wheatsfield Co-op is a community-owned retail grocer located in Ames, Iowa. It prioritizes fresh, local, and organic foods and supports a fair agricultural system by emphasizing whole, minimally processed options. Owned by more than 5,700 member-owners and partnering with over 115 local producers, it offers a broad selection for members and other shoppers. As a full-service store, it provides produce, dairy, a meat and seafood counter, a large bulk section, and categories such as beer and wine, cheese, frozen goods, supplements, body care, and home and gift items. Founded in 1974 as a buying club on the Iowa State University campus, Wheatsfield has occupied its current Ames location since 2008, and an expansion completed in January 2017 added smoothies, juices, artisan bread, co-op-made sandwiches, a full-service meat department, outdoor seating, and a teaching classroom. In late 2025 the co-op publicly noted concerns about the potential temporary inaccessibility of SNAP and other government assistance programs.
