Wilmington Health Access for Teens, Inc. (WHAT) is a non-profit, community-based organization in Wilmington, NC that provides integrated primary medical care, mental health, nutrition and preventive services to approximately 2,500 adolescents and young adults annually ages 11-24—nearly three-quarters of whom are publicly insured (Medicaid and NC Health Choice) or uninsured population. Using the nationally-recognized, evidence-based primary care delivery model for youth—endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics—WHAT operates three school-based health centers (SBHCs) in New Hanover County high schools in addition to its main facility. At each center, WHAT provides integrated or “whole-person” care, addressing each young patient’s unique physical, emotional/behavioral and nutritional health needs. WHAT serves the rapidly-growing southeastern coastal region of North Carolina, predominantly New Hanover County where over 85% of its patients reside and is home to Wilmington—one of the state’s largest and fastest growing cities.
