Founded in 1972 by William L. Winkel, Winkel Construction, Inc. began as an extension of a family homebuilding business. In 1973, an opportunity to expand into retail store construction marked a new direction for the company. By 1976, homebuilding operations ceased, and in 1981, the company was officially incorporated. During the 1970s, as many retail construction firms expanded nationwide, Winkel Construction strategically chose to concentrate its efforts in the southeastern United States. Throughout the 1980s, the company continued specializing in new and renovated retail stores in regional shopping centers while also expanding into freestanding single-user stores, multi-user buildings, and complete exterior renovations of strip centers. In 2010, William L. Winkel transitioned daily operations to his son, Richard W. Winkel, who now serves as Chief Executive Officer. Richard, an integral member of the company since earning his degree in Architectural and Construction Design in 1990, worked alongside his father for many years. William L. Winkel remains an invaluable advisor and officer of the corporation. During the 1990s, Winkel Construction expanded its service area beyond its traditional 500-mile radius from Central Florida. The company is now licensed throughout the southeastern United States, including Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. In 2013, additional licenses were obtained in Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Kentucky, further extending the company’s reach. Today, Winkel Construction, Inc. continues to focus on building retail stores in regional malls and strip centers while also expanding its expertise in medical facilities, churches, freestanding buildings, and exterior renovations of plaza-type centers. The company’s sustained growth is driven by its clients’ confidence in its performance and its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the ever-evolving construction market.
