The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is a state government agency charged with planning, building, and maintaining Wisconsin's state highways and the Interstate system, while also supporting county and local transportation networks and related modes. It coordinates statewide air, rail, water, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities and operates from a main office in Madison with regional offices to address local transportation needs. WisDOT was formed in 1967 by consolidating several agencies, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, to unify transportation governance. It works with state, federal, and local partners to meet evolving travel needs and deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality transportation services for residents and visitors, organized into three executive offices and six divisions.
